Governor DeSantis Announces Miami Metro Area Gained the Second Highest Number of Private Sector Jobs in Florida Over the Year


Miami, Fla. —
Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the Miami area reached 1,102,700 private sector jobs in May 2022, an increase of 75,900 jobs, or 7.4 percent over the year. This represents the second-highest number of private sector jobs gained over the year in May 2022 among all metro areas in Florida. The Miami area unemployment rate was 2.3 percent in May 2022, down 3.3 percentage points from the May 2021 rate of 5.6 percent. The Miami area labor force increased by 17,486 over the year, a 1.3 percent increase.

The industries gaining the most jobs over the year were trade, transportation, and utilities, increasing by 23,700 jobs; leisure and hospitality increasing by 19,100 jobs; and professional and business services increasing by 12,500 jobs. The Miami metro area led all metro areas in job gains over the year in trade, transportation, and utilities, increasing by 23,700 jobs; education and health services, increasing by 8,400 jobs; and manufacturing, increasing by 4,000 jobs.

In May 2022, Florida’s unemployment rate decreased by 1.9 percentage points over the year to 3.0 percent, and continues to remain below the national rate, which is currently 3.6 percent. Florida’s unemployment rate has remained below the national rate for 18 consecutive months and has declined or held steady for 22 consecutive months.

The state’s total private sector employment increased by 459,500 (+5.9 percent) over the year in May 2022, 0.8 percentage point faster than the national growth rate of 5.1 percent. Florida’s over-the-year private sector job growth has also exceeded the nation’s for 14 consecutive months since April 2021.
