Governor DeSantis Announces the Miami Metro Area Labor Force Increased by 56,474 Jobs Over the Year

Miami, Fla. —Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced that the Miami area unemployment rate was 3.0 percent in March 2022, down 3.8 percentage points from the rate of 6.8 percent in March 2021. The Miami area labor force increased by 56,474 over the year, a 4.4 percent increase.

The Miami area private sector employment increased by 81,500 in March 2022, or 8.0 percent, gaining the second highest number of private sector jobs over the year among all metro areas. The industries gaining the most jobs over the year were: leisure and hospitality (+25,300 jobs); trade, transportation, and utilities (+22,200 jobs); and professional and business services (+16,900 jobs).  The Miami metro area led all metro areas in job gains over the year in trade, transportation, and utilities; education and health services; and other services.

Florida’s statewide unemployment rate dropped to 3.2 percent in March 2022, marking the 16th consecutive month the state’s unemployment rate has been lower than the national rate, which is currently 3.6 percent. Florida’s labor force is experiencing steady growth, growing by 325,000, or 3.2 percent, over the year, faster than the national labor force growth rate of 2.4 percent. As of March 2022, Florida employers added jobs for the 23rd consecutive month, and Florida outpaced the nation in private sector job growth for the 12th consecutive month.
