The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity Announces the Fort Lauderdale Area June 2020 Employment Data

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Today, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity announced that the Fort Lauderdale area private-sector employment decreased by 65,700 jobs (-8.7 percent) over the year. The Fort Lauderdale area’s unemployment rate was 11.8 percent in June, up 8.6 percentage points from one year ago.

The industry losing the most jobs over the year was leisure and hospitality (-28,000 jobs).  Financial activities was the only major industry that gained jobs over the year in June 2020 (+100 jobs).

Statewide, the number of private-sector jobs increased 292,800, up 4.2 percent from May 2020.  Florida’s unemployment rate decreased to 10.4 percent in June 2020.  Florida’s labor force was up 143,000 over the month.
