Florida House Votes Unanimously to Protect Reemployment Assistance Program from Identity Theft

Mar 07, 2016

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Today, the Florida House voted unanimously to enhance protections for taxpayers and claimants in the Florida Reemployment Assistance program administered by the Department of Economic Opportunity (DEO). HB 1017, titled the DEO Cybercrime Prevention Act, will help DEO detect, prevent and prosecute identity theft-based public benefits fraud in Florida.

Cissy Proctor, Executive Director of the Department of Economic Opportunity, said, “I commend the Florida House and the bill sponsor, Representative Mike La Rosa, for supporting DEO’s efforts to protect taxpayers from criminals attempting to steal hundreds of millions of dollars in Reemployment Assistance. By recognizing the importance of safeguarding Reemployment Assistance dollars, the Florida House has voted to protect these funds for job-seekers who truly need help.”
