May Proclaimed Military Spouse Recognition Month in Florida

~Military Spouses Honored for Contributions to Florida and Local Communities~

Agency for Workforce Innovation Director Cynthia R. Lorenzo and Workforce Florida Inc. president/CEO and interim director of the Governor’s Office of Tourism, Trade and Economic Development Chris Hart IV today jointly announced that Governor Charlie Crist has proclaimed May Military Spouse Recognition Month in Florida.  The governor’s proclamation is in honor of National Military Spouse Recognition Week May 3-7, 2010 and acknowledges the contributions military spouses make to Florida and their local communities.

Approximately 285,000 family members of military personnel call Florida home.  Spouses typically shoulder significant responsibilities for maintaining these households while their active duty husbands or wives are deployed.

As part of the state’s efforts to support Florida’s military families, Workforce Florida Inc. and AWI provide employment services geared specifically to the unique needs of military members and their spouses.  Florida currently has seven regional advocates dedicated to connecting military spouses and dependents with new training and employment opportunities through the Military Family Employment Advocacy Program.

“We are honored to recognize military spouses and their contributions to our workforce,” said WFI President and OTTED Interim Director Hart. “The skills and value these individuals bring to the state and individual businesses are critical to Florida’s efforts to build a strong pipeline of skilled talent and strengthen the state’s Talent Supply Chain.”

“Military spouses bring commitment, sacrifice and service to all that they do,” said AWI Director Lorenzo.  “These men and women often relocate with a wealth of education and experience that enhance the local workforce and strengthen the fabric of their communities.  Our agency is proud to help connect them with job search and placement opportunities.”

Located at One-Stop Career Centers near every major military facility in the state, advocates help military spouses and other family members through one-on-one assessments, resume and interviewing assistance, career counseling, job search and placement help, and support throughout the process of finding work.

Of the military families receiving employment services statewide, 80 percent are served by the advocates in these seven regions.  More than half of the family members served – 60 percent - enter and retain the employment.  More than 3,000 were hired in 2009, accounting for $36.5 million in wages statewide.
