TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Today, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity announced that the Tampa area private-sector employment decreased by 102,500 jobs (-8.4 percent) over the year. The Tampa area’s unemployment rate was 13.1 percent in May, up 10.0 percentage points from one year ago.
The industry losing the most jobs over the year was leisure and hospitality (-51,700 jobs). Two major industries gained jobs over the year in May 2020: construction (+300 jobs) and government (+100 jobs).
Statewide, the number of private-sector jobs increased 185,700, up 2.7 percent from April 2020. Florida’s unemployment rate increased to 14.5 percent in May 2020. Florida’s labor force was up 237,000 over them month.
