TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Today, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity announced the Jacksonville area private-sector employment decreased by 49,400 jobs (-7.7 percent) over the year. The Jacksonville area’s unemployment rate was 11.2 percent in May, up 8.2 percentage points from one year ago.
The industry losing the most jobs over the year was leisure and hospitality (-25,300 jobs).
Statewide, the number of private-sector jobs increased 185,700, up 2.7 percent from April 2020. Florida’s unemployment rate increased to 14.5 percent in May 2020. Florida’s labor force was up 237,000 over the month.
