TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Today, the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity announced that the Tampa area private-sector employment decreased by 60,700 jobs (-5.0 percent) over the year. The Tampa area’s unemployment rate was 9.2 percent in June, up 5.8 percentage points from one year ago.
The industry losing the most jobs over the year was leisure and hospitality (-27,600 jobs). Three major industries gained jobs over the year in June 2020: construction (+1,800 jobs); manufacturing (+1,400 jobs); and government (+100 jobs).
Statewide, the number of private-sector jobs increased 292,800, up 4.2 percent from May 2020. Florida’s unemployment rate decreased to 10.4 percent in June 2020. Florida’s labor force was up 143,000 over the month.
