Crystal River

Crystal River (Citrus County) - Designated: 2003

Crystal River is a seven-mile long river in Citrus County that joins Kings Bay to flow into the Gulf of Mexico. Thirty natural springs add an average of 300 million gallons of warm water to the river every day. These springs include Three Sisters Springs, an important winter haven for the Florida Manatee. Some biologists consider Crystal River the most important refuge for manatees in the United States. The mission of the Crystal River Waterfronts Florida Partnership is to develop short-range and long-term plans for the City of Crystal River regarding studying and monitoring water quality, aquifer use, native flora and fauna in and around Kings Bay, care and protection of the Florida Manatee and other native wildlife, and the impact of stormwater and septic tanks.
