The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program collects the number of employers or reporting units, monthly employment, average employment, total wages, and average wages by the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). The count covers 98% of U.S. jobs available by industry at the county, Metropolitan Statistical Areas, state and national levels; by major industry or by detailed industry categories.

Geographic Coverage: Statewide, Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), Counties, and Workforce Regions.
Frequency: Quarterly and Annually

Industry Reclassification

The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages program (QCEW) periodically reviews specific industries and/or companies to determine whether they are correctly classified.   Changes in North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and/or county codes as a result of these reviews are considered non-economic and are introduced during the first quarter of each year.

With the publication of 1st quarter 2019 QCEW data, approximately 20,000 employees were shifted from the retail trade industry to the warehousing industry due to such a review.  This change affects statewide, Duval, Hillsborough, Manatee, Miami-Dade, Orange, Pinellas, and Polk counties.

Metropolitan Statistical Area Changes

The Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages Program (QCEW) introduced new Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) definitions beginning with the first quarter of 2014.  Please see the table below for changes.

With the release of 1st quarter 2022 data, the Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages (QCEW) program converted to the 2022 version of the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).  This conversion resulted in minor changes to the data and more accurately reflects the business activities in selected industries.  For further information on the revision, please click on Industry Changes to County Employment and Wage Data.  For a crosswalk from the .2017 NAICS to 2022 NAICS, go to NAICS17 to NAICS22.
